Crappie Fishing at Blewett Falls Lake

Like other members of the sunfish family, white crappie are nest builders, similar to bluegills that they have a tendency to nest in large beds. This occurs when the water temperature reaches 60 to 68 degrees or March though April each year. Fact is, crappie can lay 20,000 eggs with a hatch rate of 3 to 7 days, all of the hatchlings will not make it to adult stage, these hatchlings will be food for other fish like brim, bluegill and bass. You can see that going fishing on a regular basis protects the eco-system of the lake, reservoir or pond to keep it from being over populated, not to mention delicious when prepared for a meal, tender white flaky meat is great baked or deep fried.

Bass Fishing at Blewett Falls Lake

Fishing in rocky areas calls for crankbaits. These lures can be bounced off the rocks during your retrieve causing additional noise which has proven to be a fish attractant at times. Smaller finesse type baits such as Gitzits and grubs also do well around the rocks. If the rocks are just under the surface, a buzzbait will often help locate the fish, producing heart stopping strikes in the process.

Be in touch with what is happening around you. Blewett Falls Lake is generally not an over used lake. If there is a lot of boat traffic, seek a quieter place. There are times however, that boat traffic seems to help. The wake of a boat splashing against a retaining wall or stone pile causes small bait fish to be washed against the object. Bass will often hold right up against a wall waiting for these feeding opportunities.

Catfish Fishing at Blewett Falls Lake

Water temperature is the most-important clue to finding the cats on the rocks in any lake. The water temperature must be at least 65 degrees to cause the channel catfish to pull up and start staging at the edges of rock ledges near the rock bluffs and riprap where they'll spawn. The best ledges to fish are in 6 to 8 feet of water. In April, May and June, the channel cats will move into the rocks and spawn in 1 to 2 feet of water. Many times when the channel cats get really shallow, you can see them leaving wakes as they come from the rocky cover to take your baits.
